Terms of Use - Social Media

On this page you will find DCC's Terms of Use for Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Facebook

  • Terms of Use

    These Terms of Use describe how DCC communicates with the public via Facebook, a free social networking site.

    DCC currently holds one Facebook Page in each official language: facebook.com/dcc.cdc and facebook.com/cdc1.dcc.

    These Terms of Use apply to the Page listed above. Any other account or Page on Facebook bearing the DCC name or likeliness is not an official DCC account.

    The use of Facebook by DCC is intended to encourage interaction between users of this platform and DCC. DCC does not endorse any of the views in comments posted by users and in no way verifies or confirms either the accuracy of user comments or their compliance with the Terms of Use outlined on this page. Comments that violate these Terms of Use may be deleted by DCC and the user who posted the comment may be blocked by DCC to prevent further inappropriate comments.

    We look forward to sharing information with you beyond the usual web experience, but always encourage visits to the DCC Website for more detailed information.

  • Content

    The DCC Facebook Page is mainly used as an alternative method to direct users to material posted in DCC's website or to share content that resides on the Facebook page only.

  • Availability

    DCC Facebook updates are also subject to downtime that may be out of DCC's control. Because Facebook servers are managed by a third party, DCC accepts no responsibility for the unavailability or unresponsiveness of the Facebook network.

  • Posting Frequency

    The number of posts will vary. During some periods, we may post more or less frequently than average. You should expect to see new posts on the DCC Facebook accounts generally during regular working hours, Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST/EDT. Additional postings can also be expected outside of business hours.

  • Use of "Like"

    DCC's Facebook Page is open to the public, so anyone with Internet access can view the content posted. Facebook users can also "like" the DCC Pages. In doing so, they allow DCC posts and updates to appear in their "news feed". Users are required to have a valid Facebook account to "like" the DCC accounts. DCC will not "friend" any individuals, or "like" any businesses that proactively "like" our account. DCC will only take steps to remove or block users if they do not abide by these Terms of Use. Users may also be reported to Facebook if they do not comply with Facebook's terms of use.

  • Use of "Share"

    DCC may share relevant material posted by other Government of Canada social media accounts and/or other content determined to be relevant to our Facebook community and of significant value.

  • Favourite Pages

    At this time, DCC's “Favourite Pages” only include other Government of Canada institutions and organizations that we believe are relevant to the mandate of our work or illustrate our relationship with our Client-Partner (DND and the CAF). This could include pages of non-profit organizations, associations and other governmental agencies. The appearance of any particular page as a “favourite” of DCC does not imply endorsement.

  • Wall Comments

    Feedback and interaction are highly encouraged. All wall posts and comments, as well as emails sent to the DCC Facebook account will be read, and any emerging themes or helpful suggestions will be referred to the appropriate DCC staff. Although we may not be able to reply individually to all messages, they will be handled on a case-by-case basis and responded to when deemed appropriate.

    If we feel a comment or a question posed to DCC requires a response and/or a greater level of detail that is relevant to Canadians in general, we may develop a formal response and distribute the information through other channels such as our Website or other social media channels. We will pay attention to emerging themes and helpful suggestions and look forward to this potential interaction.

    Reporters are asked to send questions by e-mail to info@dcc-cdc.gc.ca and to refrain from submitting questions on Facebook.

    DCC will not tolerate comments that encourage the violation of Canadian law and may have to disclose personal information to law enforcement authorities if illegal activity is suspected.

    The organization reserves the right to edit or remove comments including but not limited to comments that:

    • are contrary to the principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms;
    • are racist, hateful, sexist, homophobic, insulting, or threatening;
    • put forward serious, unproven or inaccurate accusations against individuals or organizations;
    • are aggressive, vulgar, indecent, rude, abusive, coarse, violent, obscene or pornographic in tone or content;
    • are offensive, defamatory, disparaging or include slanderous statements to an individual or an organization;
    • are not sent by the author and/or posted by anonymous or robot accounts;
    • are put forward for advertising, phishing or spamming purposes;
    • are solicitations, advertisements, or endorsements of any financial, commercial or non-governmental agency;
    • contain announcements from labour or political organizations;
    • contain personally identifiable information about you or any other person;
    • contain any names, products or services, logos, slogans, mascots, artwork, or promotion of any brand, product or service of any company or entity, or any material protected by copyright or trademarks;
    • are unintelligible or irrelevant to the Page;
    • are written in a language other than English or French;
    • encourage or suggest illegal activity;
    • are repetitive or spamming of threads, and
    • do not, in the moderators' opinion, add to the normal flow of the discussion.

  • Accessibility

    Facebook, as a third party service provider, is not bound by Government of Canada policies for Web accessibility.

  • Official Languages

    DCC respects the Official Languages Act and is committed to ensuring that information products are available in both French and English, of equal quality. DCC's Facebook Pages are available in both official languages. Simply view the appropriate DCC Facebook Page.

    Through the very nature of the social media forum, content will vary between the English and French Facebook Page particularly with respect to messages and comments of users. All comments that originate from DCC will be made available in both official languages when it concerns both English and French communities. Comments and questions that require a response will be answered in the official language of origin or in both official languages where it is appropriate in the circumstances.

    Users should be aware that some links direct users to sites of organizations or other entities that are not subject to the Official Languages Act and that these sources are only available in the language in which they are written.

    Facebook.com is available in multiple languages including English and French. To change this user preference, go in your account settings and adjust accordingly.

  • Privacy

    DCC's Facebook accounts are not Government of Canada Websites and represent our presence on Facebook, a third-party service provider. Users are encouraged to read Facebook's privacy policy which applies to all users of Facebook. Information shared with DCC on Facebook is subject to the provisions of the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act, which means that the information may be accessed and disclosed in response to a request under either of these acts.

    Some of the personal information and "conversations" provided by you to DCC's social media accounts is collected both by Facebook and DCC. Facebook "conversations" include questions and answers, comments, "likes", and other interactions where you provide feedback on content that DCC has posted, or when DCC provides you with information based on content that you post. Under the provisions of the Privacy Act, individuals have the right of access to, correction of and protection of their personal information. Instructions for obtaining your personal information are provided in Info Source, a copy of which is available in major public and academic libraries or online.

    To protect your own privacy and the privacy of others, DCC recommends that you do not include personal information in your comments or other content you post. Personal information includes home addresses and telephone numbers, photographs containing images of identifiable individuals, and any other information consisting of personal information as defined in paragraph 3 of the Privacy Act. Should you have any questions about your privacy rights as explained in these Terms of Use, please send questions for DCC’s Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) Coordinator at info@dcc-cdc.gc.ca.

Twitter

  • Terms of Use

    DCC uses Twitter, a free micro-blogging platform offered by an American company, as one tool in its efforts to communicate clearly, quickly and in an interesting manner to the public.

    DCC currently holds two Twitter accounts, one in English and one in French: @dcc_cdc and @cdc_dcc.

    New accounts may be created for different needs within the organization and will be listed from this page when made available.

  • Content

    In addition to our own tweets, we may also occasionally retweet (RT) content from other users we think may be of interest to our followers. Provided the content is available in both official languages, we will generally aim to honour requests from the following:

    • Other government departments;
    • Our partnering organizations;
    • Our stakeholders and other non-profit organizations;
    • Our Client-Partner (DND and the CAF).
  • Availability

    We aim to update and monitor our Twitter account during regular office hours between 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. EST/EDT, Monday to Friday. We may monitor and update our Twitter accounts more sporadically during week-ends and holidays.

    Twitter may occasionally be unavailable and we accept no responsibility for lack of service owing to Twitter downtime.

  • Frequency of Tweets

    Followers can expect a few tweets a week. Be advised that there may be some periods where we have fewer tweets than others (for example holidays and weekends) or no tweets at all.

  • Following

    At this time, DCC only follows other Government of Canada institutions and organizations which we believe are relevant to the mandate of our work. This could include following Twitter accounts of our Client-Partner, Client-Partner representatives, associations and other governmental agencies.

    DCC's decision to follow a particular Twitter account does not imply endorsement of any kind.

  • Followers

    Similarly, the appearance of a Twitter user as a follower of a DCC account does not imply endorsement.

    We will take steps to remove or block a follower if that follower does not abide by Twitter's terms of service.

  • @Replies, Mentions and Direct Messages

    We welcome feedback and ideas from all our followers. All @Replies, mentions and Direct Messages (DMs) will be read and any emerging themes or helpful suggestions will be passed to the relevant people at DCC.

    Although we may not be able to reply individually to all the messages we receive through Twitter, possible responses to @Replies, mentions and Direct Messages will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

  • Retweeting DCC Posts

    Users may retweet (RT) material posted to the DCC accounts provided that the content is not changed and proper credit is given.

  • Other DCC Staff Tweeting

    Some DCC staff tweet under their own names or pseudonyms. Despite their professional affiliation with DCC, their tweets do not represent the official position of DCC, and should be considered the product of each individual as a private citizen.

  • Accessibility

    Twitter, as a third party service provider, is not bound by Government of Canada policies for Web accessibility. The Government of Canada is committed to achieving a high standard of accessibility and is working to address issues with third-party service provider platforms. If you have any problems accessing any information on Twitter, an accessible version of Twitter is available.

  • Official Languages

    DCC respects the Official Languages Act and is committed to ensuring that information products are available in both French and English, of equal quality. Tweets will be posted simultaneously in both official languages - in English on the @dcc_cdc account, and in French on the @cdc_dcc account. @Replies that require a response will be answered in the official language of origin.

    However, users should be aware that some links direct users to sites of organizations or other entities that are not subject to the Official Languages Act and that these sources are only available in the language in which they are written.

    Twitter.com is available in multiple languages including English and French. To change your settings in Twitter, select either "English" or "French" from the language selection menu available in your account settings.

  • Privacy

    DCC's Twitter accounts are not Government of Canada Websites and represent our presence on Twitter. Users are encouraged to read Twitter privacy policy which applies to all users of Twitter. Information shared with DCC on Twitter is subject to the provisions of the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act, which means that the information may be accessed and disclosed in response to a request under either of these acts. It is also possible that the Access to Information requestor will choose to access the information directly via the social media site.

    Some of the personal information and "conversations" provided by you to DCC's social media accounts is collected both by Twitter and DCC. Twitter "conversations" include questions and answers, comments, and other interactions where you provide feedback on content that DCC has posted, or when DCC provides you with information based on content that you post. Under the provisions of the Privacy Act, individuals have the right of access to, correction of and protection of their personal information. Instructions for obtaining your personal information are provided in Info Source, a copy of which is available in major public and academic libraries or online.

YouTube

  • Terms of Use

    This Term of Use describes how DCC communicates with the public via YouTube, a free video-sharing platform.

    DCC currently holds one YouTube channel showing content in both languages at http://www.youtube.com/user/DCCCommunications.

    These YouTube Term of Use apply to the channels listed above. Any other account or channel on YouTube bearing the DCC name is not an official DCC account.

  • Content

    YouTube serves as an additional mechanism to reach Canadians and is mainly used to share videos.

    We may also occasionally broadcast content from other users that may be of interest to our viewers or from partners that have requested that DCC broadcast their content. Provided the content is available in both official languages, we will generally agree to broadcast videos when requested by other government departments or partners and we will consider requests from the following:

    • Organizations collaborating with DCC; and
    • DCC stakeholders, Client-Partner and other non-profit organizations.
  • Availability

    DCC's YouTube channel is also subject to downtime that may be out of DCC’s control. As such, we cannot be held responsible for the availability or unresponsiveness of the YouTube website and DCC's YouTube channel.

  • Subscriptions

    We only subscribe to and display related channels of other Government of Canada YouTube accounts as well as channels of organizations that are relevant to our mandate. This could include subscribing to YouTube accounts of non-profit organizations, professional associations and other governmental agencies.

    The decision to subscribe to or display a particular YouTube account of another organization does not imply endorsement of any kind of that organization's products or services.

  • Subscribers

    Users are invited to subscribe to our channel.

    We will only take steps to remove or block subscribers if they do not abide by this YouTube Term of Use. DCC may also report users to YouTube if they do not comply with YouTube's terms of service.

    The appearance of a YouTube user as a subscriber of the DCC YouTube channel does not imply endorsement of any kind.

  • Feedback and Messages

    All messages sent to the DCC YouTube inbox will be read, and emerging themes or helpful suggestions will be directed to the appropriate DCC staff.

    Although we may not be able to reply individually to all messages, they will be handled on a case-by-case basis and responded to when deemed appropriate. If we determine that a comment or a question posed to DCC requires a response and that such response would be beneficial to the public in general, we may develop a formal response and distribute the information through other channels, including the DCC website or other social media channels.

    To protect your privacy we also ask that you do not include sensitive personal information, such as your health card number, in your message.

  • Embedding Videos on Other Websites

    DCC permits most of its videos to be embedded on other websites by enabling the YouTube Embedded Player. This feature may be disabled at any time without prior notice by DCC or YouTube. DCC will not be responsible for any damages resulting from the disabling of such function.
