Diversity and Inclusion

DCC's workforce reflects Canadian society, comprising people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. We believe employee diversity is a strategic advantage and work to leverage the differences among members of our team — to create a workplace in which all employees feel included and can achieve their full potential. Our goal is to provide a healthy, productive and respectful work environment that embraces equity, diversity and inclusion, and encourages all employees to contribute to a respectful workplace free from bias, harassment and discrimination.

Focus on People

“In April 1994, I survived the genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda and lost members of my family due to social discrimination. As a member of the DI committee, I am proud to say that DCC is a workplace that provides equal opportunity to members of all employment equity groups and supports them in achieving their full potential.”

- Marie-Claire Wihogora, Administrative Assistant, Industrial Security and National Capital Region DI Committee representative.

“I've always told my team: 'Outside home, this is where we spend most of our time. We are a family.' As a leader, I want to make sure they are well supported and well understood.”

- Tejeet Sodhi, Manager, Real Property Operations Support and Regional Service Line Leader, Project and Program Management

“DCC isn't about gender; it's about capability,” says Elizabeth. “It's what I saw when I first joined the company 19 years ago, and what I see now.”

- Elizabeth Mah, Regional Director, National Capital Region

Diversity and Inclusion in Action at DCC

DI Strategy 2.0

On April 20th, 2021, DCC launched DI Strategy 2.0, a deliberate and intentional continuation of DCC’s first strategy, written by and for employees. Our DI journey will ensure DCC continues to be a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive workplace for all employees.

Over the next five years, DCC’s focus will be on new initiatives to advance diversity and a culture of inclusion and acceptance. Our strength has always been our diverse workforce and we look forward to all that we will accomplish together.

Black History Month at DCC

DCC celebrates Black History Month each year with opportunities for employees to learn more about the Black experience in Canada, including the many contributions of Black Canadians to the nation's cultural diversity and prosperity.

On February 17, 2022, DCCers Kevin P. Petit-Frère, CPA, CA, Director of Finance and Nadine Pozzobon, Team Leader, Construction Services, participated in a refreshingly honest and engaging conversation with DCC Board Member Steve Anderson, Deputy Mayor of Shelburne, Ontario, author, father, and multiple-award-winning litigation lawyer, with an introduction by Marie-Claire Wihogora, Administrator, Corporate Security.

All DCC employees were invited to listen to this conversation between Steve, Kevin, and Nadine as they discussed what it means to be a Black leader and role model.

Women's Information Network

On March 8, 2021 (International Women's Day), DCC concluded its six-part Women's Information Network video series, an internal forum for employees to focus on diversity and inclusion, and to celebrate and foster the professional growth and career development of women and men at DCC, alike. The Network is an initiative borne of the 2017–2020 DCC Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, under which DCC is bringing to life its commitment to embrace diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

DCC honoured as inspirational role model for employment equity

For the third year in a row, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) recognized DCC for its achievements in employment equity. The award recognizes employers who are inspirational role models, championing employment equity in their sector in addition to demonstrating a strong commitment to and achieving success in implementing employment equity in their own organization. Two DCC executives were also recognized by ESDC as Employment Equity Champions.

Exploring our cultures

DCC's International Cuisine lunch is an annual event that celebrates the diverse cultural backgrounds of DCC employees. Employees are invited to prepare a dish that showcases either their own culture or another of their choosing, offering a chance for DCC foodies to learn about dishes and cultures from around the world. Proceeds from this event are donated to the annual DCC United Way Charitable Campaign.

A longstanding tradition for DCC's Head Office and National Capital Region staff, this event has now inspired dozens of similar luncheons hosted at DCC sites across the country.

In 2020, due to the global pandemic and resulting work from home rules, the annual event was reimagined as the DCC International Cuisine Cookbook. Employees had the chance to share their favourite cultural recipes with their colleagues across the country, and the sale of the e-book raised over $1,000 for the United Way.

Diversity and Inclusion and Employment Equity

Each year, DCC conducts its annual Count Yourself In! campaign. All DCC employees are encouraged to complete the enhanced online employment equity and diversity questionnaire and are reminded of the importance of keeping their information up to date. The data collected helps DCC put the resources and tools in place to make our employee experience an even better one. In 2020, DCC enhanced the questionnaire by providing members of the LGBTQ2+ committee an opportunity to voluntarily self-identify.

In 2020, DCC's results compared favourably against the labour market availability (LMA) for the designated groups in the construction industry.
