A unique approach to the design process is supporting the construction of a temporary fitness facility at CFB Halifax. Excavation and foundation work is underway, preparing for a pre‑engineered building system that will become 1,250 square metres of winterized space for basketball, volleyball, badminton and ball hockey, along with cardio and weights.

Modelled after a similar facility at CFB Borden, this is not a typical design-bid-build project, explains Lori Fudge, DCC Technical Specialist, Project Management in the Atlantic Regional Office, and the project manager on behalf of DND.

“It went out to tender as a performance specification package, with the successful contractor needing to complete the design,” she explains. “We also talked to our colleagues in Borden, who shared lessons learned that we’re able to incorporate into the design’s early stages,” Fudge adds.

The facility is expected to open in fall 2023, bridging the gap between the closure of the base’s STADPLEX fitness facility at the end of its 75‑year life and the construction of a permanent replacement.
