The Sherbrooke Primary Reserve Units’ Housing Project includes restoration of the Colonel Gaëtan-Côté Armoury (Belvédère), built in 1909, the front portions of the William Armoury originally erected between 1839 and 1841, as well as demolition of the central and rear portions, followed by reconstruction. A third site, the location of which has yet to be determined, will be required to meet all the units’ operational needs.
A Modified Design-Build contract was awarded for this project in December 2023. The first phase of the work, which includes preliminary studies, condition and heritage assessments of the Belvédère and William Armouries, and the preliminary design development, has been completed. Plans and design specifications for the Belvédère and William sites, as well as the yet to be determined third site, will take place in phase two. Phase three, which will include construction, restoration and renovation work, is scheduled to begin in 2027.
“These buildings are part of the region’s military heritage. and their architectural value is undeniable. It is therefore important to do everything possible to preserve the historic character of the buildings in order to preserve their legacy,” points out Marie-Ève Julien, DCC Site Manager in Saint-Jean.
To that end, the DCC team is working closely with the Client-Partner (Directorate Construction Project Delivery, ADM[IE]) as well as the designer-builder and its team.
The Sherbrooke armouries will house five units of the Sherbrooke Primary Reserve, three cadet corps and the Technical Services of the 2nd Canadian Division.
“Each unit has its own specific needs. This work will optimize the space and bring the site to its full potential, while reaffirming the presence of Canada’s Reserve Force in the region. We are very proud to be collaborating on this project,” concludes Marie-Ève.
This investment is part of Canada’s renewed defence policy, Our North, Strong and Free, supporting the long-term growth of the Primary Reserve Force to 30,000 members.
