Protecting Canadian sovereignty is a key element of Canada’s defence policy: Our North, Strong and Free. An official ceremony on April 24, 2024 broke ground on a building that will support both Canada’s goals and the people responsible for achieving them.
The $136-million Yellowknife Multipurpose Facility, expected to be completed in the winter of 2026-27, will create a new headquarters for the 1st Canadian Rangers Patrol Group, along with elements of Joint Task Force (North).
“DCC is the contracting authority, and is actively involved in the design, construction, and commissioning of our Client-Partner’s newest northern facility,” says Dave Nolan, Program Leader at DCC Yellowknife.
The facility will bring together units and personnel that are currently located in several disconnected temporary sites in the city, providing an integrated, secure compound from which to operate. Situated on well-used public lands rather than a greenfield site, the 9,200-square-metre facility will feature offices, classrooms, space for tactical exercises, equipment storage and a military vehicle garage.
“This purpose-built facility is designed to help the Department of National Defence realize synergy between those deployed in the North, and increase coordination for future operations,” Dave explains. He adds that DCC is an excellent position to offer subject matter experts to assist the project team in managing the complex issues involved, including a short construction season.
“We are looking forward to eventually handing over a beautiful new building to DND that successfully meets the needs of everyone who works within it,” he says.
