A major infrastructure upgrade is underway at 14 Wing Greenwood, where construction of a new refuelling tender garage recently reached a key milestone with the raising of its steel structure. This $33-million facility will replace the existing 1963-built garage, offering 24/7 refuelling and defuelling support for flying missions.
With space for 10 refuelling vehicles, the 2,558-m2 garage includes dedicated bays for vehicle maintenance and washing, with significantly improved clearance around each vehicle for daily inspections and testing. Advanced systems for handling substances such as fuel, oil, glycol, and firefighting foam will ensure environmental protection through specialized sanitary lines and on-site containment. Beyond its operational upgrades, the building is classified as a post-disaster structure, engineered to withstand seismic activity and other extreme events.
DCC is working closely with local Client-Partner colleagues from Real Property Operations and Director, Construction Project Delivery to facilitate the project’s success.
“This project has a lot of scope for collaboration between DCC and our Client-Partners, along with the consultant and contractors,” notes Jenna Marshall, DCC Coordinator, Construction Services. “I appreciate the opportunity to work together to create technical solutions, ensuring the design aligns with current needs while mitigating budget impacts.”
Ralph Heinemann, fellow DCC Coordinator, Construction Services, agrees. “We’re actively identifying areas for action—we have a lot of experience in-house, in our Contract Management team for example, that allows us to provide advice and get ahead of possible issues.”
The result is a facility that not only meets current operational needs but also reflects a forward-thinking approach to safety, sustainability, and resilience. Completion is expected by September 2026.
