When the DCC Moose Jaw team saw an opportunity to simplify how project information was being shared with stakeholders, they set out to create a better solution.
By combining Microsoft Planner, Power BI and existing project data sources, the team developed a dashboard that replaced most of the spreadsheets previously used to track project status and funding information. The result is a clearer view of project delivery for both DCC and the Client-Partner, along with a more efficient way to access current project data.
“We wanted to make it easier for people to find the information they need and have confidence they’re looking at the most current picture,” says Carrie Seman, DCC Program Leader. “The goal wasn’t to create something new for the sake of it. It was about improving how we communicate and support decision-making.”
The initiative provides greater visibility into how projects move through delivery and helps stakeholders access project information more easily. The dashboard brings together data from multiple sources into a single view, reducing the need to manually compile and reconcile information from multiple sources. Regular updates help ensure the information remains current and reliable. Client-Partners can now access project information directly through Power BI, reducing the need for manual follow-up and improving overall situational awareness.
The dashboard grew from an employee-generated idea supported through DCC’s innovation program, innoviCulture. By encouraging staff to identify opportunities for improvement and experiment with new approaches, the program helps turn practical ideas into solutions that benefit both DCC and its Client-Partners.
“What makes this achievement special is that it came directly from the site team,” says Nicole Burgess, DCC Regional Service Line Leader, Project and Program Management Services. “They identified a challenge, worked together to solve it and created a practical solution that improves transparency and helps support decision-making.”
The team continues to refine the tool and develop resources that could help other DCC sites adapt the approach to meet their own needs.
