Whether it's due to the difference in language, business culture or work setting with the Client-Partner, there's no doubt about it – a posting with Defence Construction Canada overseas is unlike any experience here in Canada, as current team's experiences in Latvia have proven again.

"Working with a foreign contractor was new and I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was extremely satisfied with the working relationship I was able to foster," said Ron McMaster, Coordinator, Construction Services from Trenton, who has completed two postings to Latvia.

McMaster was tasked with delivering infrastructure projects for Operation Reassurance. Earlier in the year, he had responded to a call for interested participants to undertake required training and then in the summer of 2017, he arrived in Latvia to continue managing the active contracts.

"Being embedded with the soldiers on the ground, I really felt part of their team. We all had the same goal and that helped to foster a great team relationship," he adds.

In 2017, the Latvia mission started with site works for life support areas before moving to the construction of vehicle maintenance facilities, personnel support buildings, military police office, international house and more. The team is now working on a medical station and are forecast to be there until 2021.

What is different about the work is being overseas – maneuvering in different business settings, managing different time zones, working with the Client-Partner in a different way than at home, and being away from your home and office.

"The person on the ground is the face of DCC. Not only do they manage the ongoing contracts, they work directly with our Client-Partner to address new requirements. They become part of the team to deliver on the Client-Partner's mission," said Michael Langsford, Regional Service Line Leader. "Everyone who has deployed has done a great job of representing DCC and Canada."
