In December 2019, the International Council of Air Shows presented the prestigious Platinum Pinnacle Award to the Bagotville International Air Show 2019 (BIAS 2019). The organization has been recognized globally for taking up the huge challenge to become carbon neutral, ISO 20121-certified, and BNQ Standard 9700-253-certified. Over 1,070 tonnes of CO2 were offset thanks to this bold initiative by Environmental Compliance and Greening (ECG) at CFB Bagotville, supported by Defence Construction Canada's Environmental Services.

"The SAIB 2019 organization and ECG have been targeting a sustainable approach to the event for several years. When the Defence Energy and Environment Strategy was introduced in 2017, they were able to step up their efforts and confirm their sustainable approach while receiving certifications," said Geneviève Gobeil, DCC Team Leader, Environmental Services.

Everything is considered when it comes to achieving eco-friendliness and carbon neutrality targets. For example, emissions from travel by all participating military personnel, volunteers, and organizers over a one-year period were offset.

However, Sabrina Girard, DCC Coordinator, Environmental Services, points out that the main challenge of this innovative approach is communication because "the nature of the event makes it difficult to associate it with a sustainable approach. We had to explain to people that SAIB 2019 is an eco-friendly event that includes economic and social dimensions, in addition to environmental issues."

Because of the success of this work, DCC, in support of DND, will be presenting the eco-friendly approach in Europe at one of the largest international air show conventions.
